About Kilim Rugs.

Kilim, a word of Turkish origin, denotes a pileless rug of many uses produced by one of several flatweaving techniques that have a common or closely related heritage and are practiced in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China.

The main difference between a Kilim rug and other types of handmade rugs is that a Kilim is a flatweave (as touched on above). What is a flatweave? Flatweave describes a rug that is woven on a loom rather than knotted (by hand one knot at a time). It is created by interlocking warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads. So still very much made by hand - but with a weaving technique, rather than a knotting. 

About Mashwani Design Rugs.

The Tribal Mashwani Collection features designs that have been woven for centuries by Mashwan tribes in the mountains of central Afghanistan. They are still semi-nomad and mostly found in the North West of Afghanistan/suburb of Herat (a border town between Afghanistan and Iran). The Mashwani Carpets/Kilims are mostly produced by the women as they have developed wonderful skill of weaving carpets (piled) and Kilims (flat). The Mashwani men mostly remained busy in the outdoor activities like grazing sheep, shivering and preparing thread and dyeing wool. They have good skill of producing vegetable dyes from the local herbs, fruits and barks of the trees. These rugs produced by the mashwanis as known with reference to the name of clan. Their work is much better in quality compared with rugs produced by other nomads of this area. Their work being fine is quite popular and great seller. We have personally observed that over a period of time, the availability of Mashwani rugs has become slow, may be for the reason that this clan is also in the process of urbanization or settling. This is fine quality sheep wool and vegetable dyes have been used . Mashwani rugs are unusually bright and colorful, featuring a densely patterned design of pink and orange or red diamonds.
